Middle School Parents
Middle School is a time when students begin to break away and become independent. A/E students in Geneva no longer have one A/E teacher to rely on, they change teachers for each class and may find that while accelerated in some subjects, they struggle in others. The goal of the Middle School committee of GEARS is to help parents of middle schoolers understand and take advantage of the opportunities that are out there to stretch your child's mind and push them to achieve more. We also hope to help you understand how to advocate for your student if the school is not meeting his or her academic needs.
Honors and AP Information Night 2011
Parents of 8th graders, watch your mail for the Honors and AP information night, an opportunity to learn more about the Honors and AP classes at Geneva High School. This event was held December 1, 2011 at the high school. Information from the presentation is available on the HS web site or by clicking
here.
Qualification Matrix
Questions often arise as to the criteria used to place students in the A/E Math and Language Arts programs at the middle school. The district uses a "matrix" of Iowa Test of Basic Skills and Cognative Abilities Test scores as well as math competency exams administered in the Spring of 5th grade and teacher recommendations for placement in the middle school accelerated programs. The Middle School Matrices are posted on the District's Acceleration and Enrichment Website.

A/E Program Changes for 2009-2010 School Year
At the September GEARS meeting, Dr. Ramsey presented the findings of a Committee that spent over two years researching the status of the District 304 Elementary and Middle School A/E program by surveying students, parents and teachers in District 304 as well as researching and visiting other school districts in the Chicago suburbs. The entire presentation is available here, however, many parents are interested in the recommendations made by the Committee. With the exception of adding staff that has been postponed until the economic outlook improves, those recommendations have been, or are in the process of being implemented within the District this school year. A comprehensive list of those recommendations can be found here.
