High School Parents

As parents of high school students, we are concerned about course offerings, scheduling of Honors and AP courses and college applications.  Homework, sports, service, test prep and activities take up most of our students' time.  Knowing how to balance these activities and receiving the guidance needed to gain acceptance into competitive colleges are important issues for gifted and talented high school students.  The purpose of the high school committee of GEARS is to inform you of the upcoming test dates, college fairs and other information necessary to help you help your student.

We have revamped the focus of our high school committee to include networking regarding college admissions.
Our next High School and College Admissions Networking Committee meeting is scheduled for
Monday, January 9 at 10:00am at the Panera in Batavia (145 W. Wilson)

National Merit Semifinalists
Four Geneva High School students have landed on the list of National Merit Semifinalists.

James L. Bartusek, Courtney E. Kein, Mia C. Schrilla and Christopher M. Warren are the seniors from Geneva whose names were announced
September 14, 2011.

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.  About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.  The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

AP Scholar Awards (Fall 2010)
From May 4th through May 13th of 2010, 206 Geneva Community High School students took 302 Advanced Placement exams.  Of the total grades reported, 81 percent were scores of 3, 4, or 5. Forty-five students at Geneva High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

Eight students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. These students are Samantha Buhr, Lee Chedister, James Mahoney, Megan Odenthal, Jacob Petit, Justin Rodriguez, Alec Vanthournout, and David Wakefield.

Fifteen students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. These students are Blair Dunbar, Patrick Furman, Molly Griffin, Jessica Huck, Meaghan Kilroy, Matthew Kimmel, Krystal LaPorte, Adam McVey, Robert O’Neil, Camille Pfetzer, Cooper Sartell, Maxwell Schaper, Mariah Shaw, Collin Waldoch, and Alexandra E. Weber.

Twenty-two students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3 or higher. The AP Scholars are Nathaniel Allison, Patrick Boduch, Margaret Brown, Stacey Cladis, Olivia Cooley, Tess Ehrhardt, Grant Fairchild, Stephanie Funkhouser, Griffith Hibbard-Curto, Garrett Lance, Miranda Orlando, Alexander Ostgaard, Jordan Otto, Matthew Parker, Ashley Persin, Scott Pospisil, Christine Richards, Dori Rogers, John Schrilla, William Stith, Michael Sunderman, and Daniel Wright.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.  About 18 percent of the 1.6 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.  Research consistently shows that AP students who score 3 or higher on AP Exams (based on a scale from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest) typically experience greater academic success in college and higher graduation rates than students who do not participate in AP.

Congratulations to all of these students on a job well done!!!
